Wilmslow Drill Hall Plaque Unveiled on Remembrance Sunday    November 9, 2015

The Site of the Wilmslow Drill Hall has been commemorated with the erection of a plaque at Waitrose which was unveiled on Remembrance Sunday when the Parade through Wilmslow paused briefly at the site.  The plaque was unveiled by Mr Craig Lancaster, Manager of Waitrose, and Cllr Martin Watkins of Wilmslow Town Council.

The idea to commemorate the site of the Drill Hall came from the WW1 Commemorations Working Group which was set up by Wilmslow Town Council to co-ordinate ideas on how to mark the centenary of WW1.  Members of the Group were keen to mark the location of the Drill Hall as this was where local men enlisted to fight in WW1 and it was from the Drill Hall that many of them left to join trains at the Wilmslow station to join their regiments.  Many of those men did not return to Wilmslow having died in foreign lands whilst fighting for their country and you can read about how the war affected Wilmslow in the monthly bulletins posted on the WW1 noticeboard located near the Library.  All of the bulletins are also available to download from Wilmslow Town Council’s website.

The blue plaque includes a moulded relief picture of the Drill Hall and was commissioned by the Commemorations Group following discussions with Waitrose.  Waitrose is also covering the costs of the plaque.

The WW1 Commemorations Working Group is very grateful to Waitrose for agreeing to mark the location of the Drill Hall.

Pictured unveiling the plaque are Cllr Joan Fitzgerald, Cllr Martin Watkins, Mr Adrian Bradley, Mrs Susan Cooper and also Mr Craig Lancaster, Manager of Waitrose.
